Daymaniyat Islands: Oman's marine nature reserve
A protected archipelago off Barka with coral reefs, turtles and reef sharks: snorkelling and diving trips, rules and the best season.
2026-10-19
The Daymaniyat (Dimaniyat) Islands are a chain of small islands off the coast of Barka and Seeb, protected as a nature reserve since 1996. Their clear water and coral reefs make them the best snorkelling and diving area near Muscat.
What you can see
Coral gardens, turtles, reef fish, rays and, with luck, reef sharks and dolphins. In some seasons whale sharks pass through.
How to visit
Licensed boat operators from Al Mouj marina, Muscat and Barka run snorkelling and diving trips. Visits are regulated: some islands are closed to landing during the bird and turtle nesting season, and only licensed operators may take visitors.
Rules
- Do not touch or stand on coral.
- Do not feed fish or disturb turtles.
- Take everything back with you.
Best time
The calmer months from autumn to spring generally offer the best conditions; summer winds can make the sea rough.
Tips
Bring reef-safe sunscreen and a rash vest. If you live in Al Mouj or Seeb, the islands are a short boat ride away.
Staying near and owning a home
Most visitors explore Oman from a base in Muscat. If you are thinking of buying, R2LUX sells homes in the communities where foreigners can own; three current listings are below.
