Green hydrogen and renewable energy in Oman
Oman wants to become one of the world's leading green hydrogen producers. Targets, locations, solar and wind projects and what it means for investors.
2026-10-19
With strong sun, steady winds in the south, vast empty land and ports facing Asia and Europe, Oman has positioned itself as a future leader in green hydrogen and renewable energy.
The hydrogen strategy
Oman aims to produce up to one million tonnes of green hydrogen a year by 2030, with much larger ambitions for later decades, and has committed to net-zero emissions by 2050. A dedicated state company allocates large land blocks to international consortia, which build solar and wind farms to power electrolysers producing hydrogen and ammonia for export.
Where
- Duqm in Al Wusta, with land, port access and the special economic zone.
- Dhofar, around Salalah, where wind resources are excellent.
Investment commitments in hydrogen projects are reported at tens of billions of dollars.

Solar and wind today
- Large solar plants near Ibri supply the national grid.
- The Dhofar wind farm near Harweel was the first large wind project in the Gulf.
- Oil and gas companies use solar power for operations, including solar steam for oil recovery.
Why it matters
Renewables and hydrogen are central to Vision 2040: they diversify exports, create skilled jobs and attract foreign investment to Duqm and Dhofar.
