Khor Ash Sham: dhow cruising in Musandam's largest fjord
Dolphins, Telegraph Island and fishing villages reachable only by boat: what a day on a dhow in Khor Ash Sham is like.
2026-10-19
Khor Ash Sham is the largest of Musandam's fjords, a long inlet surrounded by mountains rising straight from the sea. A day on a traditional dhow here is one of the classic experiences in Oman.
What a cruise includes
- Dolphins, often seen swimming alongside the boat.
- Telegraph Island, a former British telegraph station from the 1860s.
- Snorkelling stops in clear water.
- Fishing villages reachable only by boat.
- Lunch on board and time to swim.
Getting there
Cruises depart from Khasab harbour. You can fly from Muscat to Khasab or drive from the UAE via the Al Darah/Tibat border.

Best season
The cooler months from October to April are most comfortable; summer is hot but the sea is calm.
Tips
Choose a licensed operator, bring sun protection and swim modestly. See our Khasab etiquette guide for local customs.
Staying near and owning a home
Most visitors explore Oman from a base in Muscat. If you are thinking of buying, R2LUX sells homes in the communities where foreigners can own; three current listings are below.
