Masirah Island: wild beaches and kitesurfing
Oman's largest island: empty beaches, shipwrecks, turtles and some of the best kitesurfing in the region. How to get there and when to go.
2026-10-19
Masirah is Oman's largest island, off the coast of Al Wusta and South Al Sharqiyah. It is remote and quiet, with long empty beaches, fishing villages, shipwrecks and important turtle nesting sites.
Kitesurfing
Strong, steady winds during the summer monsoon make Masirah one of the best kitesurfing spots in the region, with camps on the island's east coast.
Getting there
A car ferry runs from Shannah on the mainland; the crossing takes about an hour or more depending on the tide. Allow a full day's drive from Muscat to Shannah.

Tips
Facilities are limited, so carry water and fuel. Respect turtle nesting areas.
Beach safety and etiquette
Swim only where it is safe: there are few lifeguards, and currents can be strong, especially during the summer monsoon (June to September) when red flags close many beaches. Dress modestly away from hotel beaches, take your rubbish home and never drive on turtle nesting beaches.
Living by the sea
Many of Oman's freehold communities sit on the coast. R2LUX sells beachfront and sea-view homes where foreigners can own; three current listings are below.
