Schools in Oman: a guide for expat families
How the school system works in Oman: public and private schools, international curricula, fees, the school year and how to get a place.
2026-10-19
Oman's school system has two sides: free public schools mainly for Omani children, and a large private sector used by most expatriate families.
Public schools
Public education is free for Omanis up to the end of secondary school. Grades 1 to 4 are mixed; from grade 5 boys and girls are taught separately. Teaching is in Arabic, following the national curriculum. Most expat children do not attend public schools.
Private and international schools
Private schools are licensed by the Ministry of Education, which also approves fee increases. They include:
- International schools with British, American or International Baccalaureate (IB) curricula, mostly in Muscat.
- Bilingual private schools teaching in Arabic and English.
- Community schools for Indian, Pakistani, Filipino, French and other communities, following their home curricula.
Fees
Indicative annual fees in Muscat for 2026–27:
| Type of school | Fees per year |
|---|---|
| Community schools | about OMR 800 – 2,500 |
| Omani-owned English-medium schools | about OMR 1,500 – 3,500 |
| Premium international schools | about OMR 4,000 – 10,000 |
Expect extra costs for registration, deposits, uniforms, transport and exams. Tuition at licensed schools is exempt from VAT.

The school year
Most international schools run from late August to June in three terms. Apply early, because places at popular schools are limited.
Good to know
Fees are indicative and change every year. Confirm current fees, places and admission rules directly with the school, and apply early: good schools in Muscat often have waiting lists.
