Sharqiya (Wahiba) Sands: desert camps, dunes and Bedouin life
Oman's most accessible desert: how to get to the Sharqiya Sands, choosing a camp, dune driving, camel rides and staying safe.
2026-10-19
The Sharqiya Sands, still widely known as the Wahiba Sands, are a sea of orange and honey-coloured dunes about two and a half hours from Muscat. Stretching for around 180 kilometres from north to south, they are home to Bedouin families and the most accessible desert experience in Oman.
Getting there
From the town of Bidiyah or Al Mintirib on the Muscat–Sur road, tracks lead into the sand. Camps often meet guests at the edge of the desert and drive them in, or you can drive a four-wheel drive with tyres deflated for sand.
Desert camps
Camps range from simple Bedouin-style tents to luxury lodges with private rooms and pools. Most include dinner, breakfast and sunset on the dunes.
Things to do
- Dune driving with an experienced driver.
- Camel rides and visits to Bedouin families.
- Sandboarding on the larger dunes.
- Stargazing far from city lights.

Safety
Never drive into the dunes alone or without experience, carry water and a charged phone, and avoid the midday heat in summer.
Tips
Combine with Wadi Bani Khalid, Ibra and the coast at Sur and Ras Al Jinz for a two- or three-day trip.
Staying near and owning a home
Most visitors explore Oman from a base in Muscat. If you are thinking of buying, R2LUX sells homes in the communities where foreigners can own; three current listings are below.
