Barka: Muscat's coastal neighbour in South Al Batinah
Fish market, bull-butting, Al Sawadi islands and fast-growing suburbs: a guide to Barka, 40 minutes from Muscat Airport.
2026-10-19
Barka is a coastal town in South Al Batinah Governorate, about 40 minutes west of Muscat International Airport. Long known for its fish market, palm groves and traditional sports, it has become one of the fastest-growing areas outside the capital as Muscat expands along the coast.
What Barka is known for
- Barka Fort, a restored fort near the sea, and Bait Al Nua'man, a fortified 17th-century house.
- The fish market, one of the liveliest on the Batinah coast, busiest early in the morning.
- Bull-butting, a traditional contest held on Fridays in which bulls push each other head to head, watched by crowds of locals.
- Al Sawadi beach and its rocky islands, popular for snorkelling, kayaking and weekend picnics.
- Barka halwa, the town's famous version of the traditional Omani sweet.
A growing suburb
With the Al Batinah Expressway and the Muscat Expressway, Barka is within commuting distance of Seeb and the airport. New residential neighbourhoods, schools, malls and hospitals have followed. The area also hosts major infrastructure, including power and desalination plants that supply the capital.

Living in Barka
Barka offers more space and lower prices than Muscat, with a strong local character and easy access to the beach. It suits families who work in Seeb or near the airport, and people who want a quieter coastal life. Summers are hot and humid; winters are excellent for outdoor life.
Property
Most housing in Barka is for Omani ownership and rental. New master-planned projects are emerging along this coast; foreign buyers should check whether a given project has approval for foreign ownership before reserving.
