Misfat Al Abriyeen: a mountain village of stone houses and falaj gardens
One of Oman's most picturesque villages, with stone houses built into the rock, palm terraces and a flowing falaj. How to visit respectfully.

Misfat Al Abriyeen is a traditional village perched on the slopes of the Hajar mountains above Al Hamra, about 30 minutes from Nizwa. Its old stone-and-mud houses are built on and into huge boulders, overlooking terraces of date palms, bananas and pomegranates watered by a falaj.
What to see
- The old quarter, a maze of lanes and stairways between houses, some restored as guesthouses.
- The falaj, flowing through the gardens and past the village's washing areas.
- The terraces, best seen from the walking path that loops below the village.
- Views of the valley and Al Hamra's old mud-brick town.
Visiting respectfully
Misfat is a living village. Dress modestly, stay on paths, do not enter the falaj or gardens, and ask before photographing people. Signs at the entrance explain the rules.

Getting there
A paved road climbs from Al Hamra; park outside the village and walk in.
Tips
Combine with Al Hamra's old town, the Bait Al Safah museum and the road up to Jebel Shams.
Staying near and owning a home
