Jebel Shams, the "Mountain of the Sun", is Oman's highest mountain at around 3,000 metres. Its fame comes from the view into Wadi Ghul, a canyon about a kilometre deep often called the Grand Canyon of Arabia.
The Balcony Walk
The marked W6 trail runs along a ledge on the canyon wall from the village of Al Khitaym to the abandoned village of As Sab, a return walk of about three to four hours with breathtaking views. There are no barriers; stay away from the edge and carry plenty of water.
Getting there
From Al Hamra, a road climbs to the plateau; the last part is gravel, and a four-wheel drive is strongly recommended. Allow about three hours from Muscat.
Weather
Winter nights can be close to freezing, and occasional snow has fallen on the summit. Summer is pleasant compared with the plains.

Where to stay
Mountain resorts, guesthouses and camping spots near the canyon rim make it possible to watch sunrise and sunset over the gorge.
Note
Jebel Shams is among the strategic mountain areas where foreigners cannot own property.
Staying near and owning a home
Most visitors explore Oman from a base in Muscat. If you are thinking of buying, R2LUX sells homes in the communities where foreigners can own; three current listings are below.

Jebel Akhdar: Oman's Green Mountain
Misfat Al Abriyeen: a mountain village of stone houses and falaj gardens
Wadi Shab: turquoise pools and a hidden waterfall cave
