Ras al Hadd and Ras al Jinz: Oman's turtle beaches
The easternmost point of Arabia, where green turtles nest every night. How to see them responsibly at the Ras al Jinz reserve.
2026-10-19
Ras al Hadd is the easternmost point of the Arabian Peninsula, about 45 minutes beyond Sur. Its beaches, and those of nearby Ras al Jinz, are among the most important nesting sites in the world for green turtles.
Seeing the turtles
Turtles come ashore at night throughout the year, with the most activity in summer. Visits to the beach are only allowed with rangers from the Ras al Jinz Turtle Reserve, which runs guided night and dawn tours and has a visitor centre.

Rules
- No lights, flash or phones on the nesting beach.
- Keep your distance and follow the ranger.
- Never drive or camp on nesting beaches.
The beaches
The lagoon and long beaches around Ras al Hadd are good for walking and birdwatching. The sea is open and can be rough.

Beach safety and etiquette
Swim only where it is safe: there are few lifeguards, and currents can be strong, especially during the summer monsoon (June to September) when red flags close many beaches. Dress modestly away from hotel beaches, take your rubbish home and never drive on turtle nesting beaches.
Living by the sea
Many of Oman's freehold communities sit on the coast. R2LUX sells beachfront and sea-view homes where foreigners can own; three current listings are below.
