Ras Al Jinz Turtle Reserve: watching green turtles nest
One of the Indian Ocean's key nesting beaches for green turtles. How guided night and dawn visits work, the best season and rules.
2026-10-19
Ras Al Jinz, near the easternmost tip of Arabia south of Sur, is one of the most important nesting beaches for the endangered green turtle in the Indian Ocean. Thousands of females return each year to lay eggs on the beaches they hatched from.
How visits work
Visits are only allowed on guided tours organised by the reserve: one at night to watch turtles digging nests and laying eggs, and one at dawn when hatchlings may be seen heading to the sea. Groups are small, and booking ahead is essential in peak season.
Best time
Turtles nest throughout the year, with the highest numbers in the summer and early autumn months. Sightings are never guaranteed.
Rules
- No flash, torches or phone screens on the beach.
- Stay with your guide and keep quiet.
- Never touch turtles or hatchlings.
The visitor centre
The reserve has a museum about turtles and the area's archaeology, and an eco-lodge for overnight stays.
Tips
Combine with Sur, Ras Al Hadd, Wadi Shab and the Sharqiya Sands.
Staying near and owning a home
Most visitors explore Oman from a base in Muscat. If you are thinking of buying, R2LUX sells homes in the communities where foreigners can own; three current listings are below.
