Wadi Shab: turquoise pools and a hidden waterfall cave
Oman's most famous wadi hike: the boat crossing, the walk, swimming through pools to the cave waterfall, and tips for a safe visit.

Wadi Shab, on the coast between Muscat and Sur, is the most popular wadi in Oman. A short boat ride, a walk through a gorge and a swim through emerald pools lead to a waterfall hidden inside a cave.
The route
- Park at the foot of the highway bridge near Tiwi and take the small boat across the first pool.
- Walk about 45 minutes to an hour along a path past date palms and falaj channels.
- Swim through a series of pools to a narrow gap in the rock; squeeze through to reach the cave with its waterfall.
What to bring
Water shoes, a waterproof bag, plenty of water and sun protection. Leave valuables in the car safe or at home.

Safety and conduct
- Never visit after heavy rain; wadis can flood suddenly.
- Swim only if you are confident; the pools are deep.
- Cover up while walking through the villages; swimwear is for the pools.
- Take your rubbish with you.
Timing
Go early in the morning, especially at weekends and in the cooler months when the wadi is busiest. Combine with Wadi Tiwi and the Bimmah Sinkhole.
Staying near and owning a home
Most visitors explore Oman from a base in Muscat. If you are thinking of buying, R2LUX sells homes in the communities where foreigners can own; three current listings are below.
