Wadi Darbat: waterfalls and lakes in Dhofar's khareef
Dhofar's most famous valley turns green in the monsoon, with waterfalls, a lake, boats and grazing camels. When to go and what to see.

Wadi Darbat, in the mountains above Taqah east of Salalah, is the best place to see Dhofar transformed by the khareef. From late June to September, the valley turns green, a lake fills, and a waterfall pours over the cliff above the plain.
What to see
- The lake, with pedal boats and kayaks in season.
- The Darbat waterfall, flowing over a tufa cliff after good rains.
- Caves in the valley walls and grazing camels and cattle.
- Viewpoints over the plain and the coast at Taqah.
When to go
The khareef season and the weeks after it are best, when water is flowing. In the dry months the valley is quieter and browner, but still scenic.

Tips
- The valley is very busy at khareef weekends; go early.
- Fog makes mountain roads slippery; drive slowly.
- Respect grazing animals and local herders.
Nearby
Taqah's fort, Khor Rori (Sumhuram), Mirbat and Jebel Samhan.
