Ibri: tombs, forts and the desert edge of Ad Dhahirah
A guide to Ibri, capital of Ad Dhahirah, home to the 5,000-year-old Bat tombs, old mud-brick quarters, a lively souq and some of Oman's largest solar farms.

Ibri, the capital of Ad Dhahirah Governorate, lies on the western side of the Hajar mountains where the plains run out towards the Empty Quarter. It is about three hours from Muscat and an hour and a half from Nizwa, and it is one of the most traditional towns in Oman.
Bat, Al-Khutm and Al-Ayn
Ibri's great treasure is its prehistory. Around the villages of Bat, Al-Khutm and Al-Ayn stand dozens of beehive-shaped stone tombs and towers from the 3rd millennium BC, one of the most complete Bronze Age landscapes in the world. UNESCO inscribed them as a World Heritage Site in 1988. The tombs of Al-Ayn, lined up on a ridge below the Jebel Misht peak, are especially striking at sunset.
The town
- Ibri Fort and the old quarter around it.
- Sulaif, an abandoned fortified mud-brick village on a rocky outcrop at the edge of town.
- Ibri souq, one of the busiest in the interior, especially on Thursday mornings when livestock is traded.
- Date groves irrigated by aflaj channels.
Economy
Ibri lives from agriculture, trade with the surrounding villages and, increasingly, energy. The Ibri solar plants on the desert plain are among the largest solar facilities in Oman and part of the country's plan to produce much of its electricity from renewables. Mining and quarrying also play a role in the governorate.

Living in Ibri
Life in Ibri is conservative and quiet, with strong tribal and family traditions. Expatriates are mostly teachers, health workers and engineers. Housing is affordable, and Ibri has a university college and the main services, but for international schools and specialist care families travel to Nizwa or Muscat.
Property
Ad Dhahirah is listed among areas where foreign land ownership is restricted, and Ibri has no tourism complexes open to foreign buyers. It is a destination for history and road trips rather than property.
