Jebel Akhdar: Oman's Green Mountain
Terraced villages, roses, pomegranates and cool air at 2,000 metres: how to visit Jebel Akhdar, the 4x4 rule, the best seasons and walks.
2026-10-19
Jebel Akhdar, the "Green Mountain", is a high plateau in the Hajar mountains above Nizwa. At around 2,000 metres, it is often 10°C or more cooler than Muscat, which makes it a favourite escape in summer.
What to see
- Terraced villages such as Al Ayn, Ash Shirayjah and Wadi Bani Habib, clinging to the edge of the canyon.
- Rose gardens: in spring (around March to April) Damask roses bloom and villagers distil rose water.
- Pomegranates, walnuts and apricots grown on irrigated terraces.
- Diana's Point and other viewpoints over the canyon.
Getting there
The road climbs steeply from Birkat Al Mouz near Nizwa. A four-wheel-drive vehicle is required; police at the checkpoint turn back ordinary cars. The drive from Muscat takes about two and a half hours.
Walks
A popular village walk links Al Ayn, Al Aqr and Ash Shirayjah along the terraces and falaj channels. Wear good shoes and carry water.

Where to stay
Several resorts, from luxury properties on the canyon edge to simpler hotels, offer views and cool nights.
Note
Jebel Akhdar is among the areas where foreigners cannot own property.
Staying near and owning a home
Most visitors explore Oman from a base in Muscat. If you are thinking of buying, R2LUX sells homes in the communities where foreigners can own; three current listings are below.

Jebel Shams: Oman's highest mountain and its Grand Canyon
Nizwa Fort: the great round tower of Oman's interior
