Metro, trains and buses in Oman: Muscat Metro and Hafeet Rail
Is there a metro in Muscat? The planned 55 km Muscat Metro, the Hafeet Rail link to Abu Dhabi, Mwasalat buses and how people get around today.
2026-10-19
Oman does not yet have a metro or passenger railway. Most people drive, but major projects are under way.
Muscat Metro (planned)
- First line of about 55 kilometres from Sultan Haitham City to Ruwi, passing Muscat International Airport, Ghala and Al Khuwair.
- About 42 stations, including seven major interchanges.
- Studies began in 2023. In June 2026 Oman and France signed an agreement to cooperate on the project. No construction start or opening date has been announced.

Hafeet Rail (under construction)
- Links Sohar Port with the UAE rail network via Al Buraimi and Al Ain.
- Passenger trains designed for up to 200 km/h: about 1 hour 40 minutes from Sohar to Abu Dhabi and 47 minutes from Sohar to Al Ain.
- About 40% complete in April 2026, with trial operations expected in late 2027.
Buses and taxis today
- Mwasalat runs city buses in Muscat and Salalah and intercity coaches, including to Dubai.
- Taxis and ride-hailing apps operate in Muscat.

What it means for homebuyers
Homes near future metro stations, such as in Sultan Haitham City and along the airport corridor, are likely to benefit from better connections.
Living near the main roads
