Muscat Expressway: the city's inland bypass
The 54 km expressway parallel to Sultan Qaboos Street: route, interchanges and the widening project that started in 2026.
2026-10-19
The Muscat Expressway runs for about 54 kilometres inland and parallel to Sultan Qaboos Street, from the Qurum area to the Halban interchange, where it joins the Batinah Expressway.
Expansion
A major upgrade was due to be awarded in early 2026:
- Five lanes in each direction from Al Qurm to Al Khuwair.
- Six lanes in each direction from Al Khuwair past the Halban interchange.
- A new flyover from Al Nahda Street, an upgraded Saih Al Maleh interchange, wider wadi bridges and a direct connection to Sultan Haitham City.
Who uses it
Commuters between west Muscat (Al Khoudh, Al Mouj, Muscat Hills, Sultan Haitham City) and the city centre, and through traffic to the Batinah coast.
