Ruwi: Muscat's busy business and trading district
Banks, the Central Business District, shops and one of the city's most diverse communities: what Ruwi is like today.
2026-10-19
Ruwi lies in a valley behind Muttrah and was Muscat's commercial centre before the city spread west. It remains a busy, diverse district of banks, shops and apartments.
Character
The Central Business District is home to the Central Bank of Oman and many bank headquarters. Around it, Ruwi High Street and the surrounding blocks are full of electronics shops, tailors, jewellers, travel agents and restaurants serving food from South Asia and across the region. Ruwi has a large South Asian community and a lively street life, especially on weekend evenings.

What to see
- The Sultan's Armed Forces Museum in Bait Al Falaj.
- The Ruwi clock tower area and the souq streets.
- Some of Muscat's best-value restaurants.
Living there
Ruwi offers affordable apartments close to Muttrah and the old city, with buses and taxis everywhere. It is busy and dense, with less greenery and parking than newer districts.

Can foreigners buy?
Ruwi is not a designated area for foreign freehold ownership.
