Is Oman safe? Security, crime and safety tips
How safe Oman is for residents and visitors: crime levels, the 2026 safety ranking, women's safety, laws to know, road and nature risks and emergency numbers.
2026-10-19
Oman is widely considered one of the safest countries in the world. In a 2026 global safety index by US News & World Report, it ranked second, just behind Singapore, based on crime, law enforcement, political stability, emergency preparedness and public perception.
Crime
Violent crime is rare and petty crime is low. Families, women and solo travellers generally feel safe at any hour. The Royal Oman Police are visible and professional.
Political stability
Oman has a long record of stability and neutrality, and it stays out of regional conflicts while acting as a mediator.
The real risks
- Roads: speeding and long desert drives cause most serious accidents.
- Flash floods: never cross a flowing wadi after rain.
- Heat: in summer, avoid hiking in the middle of the day and carry plenty of water.
- Sea: strong currents on the Arabian Sea coast during the summer monsoon.

Laws to respect
Drug offences are punished severely. Dress modestly in public places, avoid public displays of affection, do not photograph military sites or people without permission, and respect Ramadan rules.
Emergencies
Call 9999 for police, ambulance and fire.
