Sur's neighbourhoods: Al Ayjah, Sur Al Balush and the old town
The two sides of Sur's lagoon, the dhow yards, the souq and the newer districts: where to stay and live in Sur.
2026-10-19
Sur is built around a lagoon, with its districts facing each other across the water and spreading along the coast and inland.
Al Ayjah
On the far side of the lagoon, Al Ayjah is a quiet district of white houses, old merchant homes with carved doors, a lighthouse and watchtowers. It is reached by a bridge and is the most picturesque part of Sur.
The dhow yards and lagoon front
Along the lagoon, the dhow yards and the maritime museum are next to older housing and the fishing harbour.
Sur Al Balush and the coast
Sur Al Balush and the neighbouring coastal districts have residential streets near the beach and the corniche, with views of the dhows at anchor.
Bilad Sur and the souq area
Inland, Bilad Sur with its castle and the souq area form the town's traditional centre, with shops and services.
Newer districts
Along the coastal highway and roads towards the LNG plant are newer residential districts with villas and apartments, popular with people working in industry.
Can foreigners buy?
Sur is not a designated area for foreign ownership.
