Etiquette in Duqm: a new town in a traditional region
Duqm is a modern economic zone in the heart of traditional Al Wusta. How to behave with local Bedouin communities, on site and on the empty coast.
2026-10-19
Duqm is a new economic zone built in Al Wusta, one of Oman's most sparsely populated and traditional regions, home to Bedouin and fishing communities. Many people working there are new to Oman.
On project sites
Safety rules, Omani colleagues and local suppliers deserve the same formality as in Muscat: proper greetings, patience and respect for prayer times. Many companies have codes of conduct for interaction with the local community.
Bedouin and fishing communities
Communities around Duqm keep traditional ways. If you meet herders or fishermen, greet them, ask before photographing and respect grazing and fishing areas. Hospitality may be offered; accept tea or coffee if you can.
Desert and coast
Stay on established tracks, travel with another vehicle in remote areas, do not disturb nesting birds or turtles on beaches and take all rubbish with you.
Driving
Long, straight roads tempt speeding; camels cross unexpectedly, especially at night. Fuel up whenever you can.
The basics everywhere in Oman
- Greet first with as-salamu alaykum; handshakes are common between men, but wait for a woman to offer her hand.
- Use your right hand to eat, give and receive.
- Dress modestly in public, with shoulders and knees covered.
- Ask before photographing people, especially women, and never photograph military or palace sites.
- Accept coffee and dates when offered; shake the cup gently when you have had enough.
- Keep your voice calm; public anger and swearing are taken seriously.
