Etiquette in Nizwa: respecting Oman's traditional heartland
Nizwa is conservative and proud of its heritage. How to dress, behave at the Friday livestock market, visit villages and mosques, and photograph respectfully.

Nizwa is the historic religious and cultural centre of Oman's interior, and it is more conservative than Muscat. Locals are friendly and used to visitors, but they appreciate those who respect traditional values.
Dress
Dress more conservatively than in Muscat: long trousers or skirts, covered shoulders, and for women a light scarf is useful when visiting mosques or villages. Shorts in the souq or village lanes draw attention.
The Friday livestock market
Early on Friday mornings goats and cattle are paraded in a circle and auctioned. It is a working market, not a show: stay outside the ring, give way to animals and their handlers, and ask before photographing people. Arrive early and leave before Friday prayers.
The fort, the souq and the mosque
The fort and souq welcome visitors; the Friday mosque beside the fort is for worship and generally not open to non-Muslims. In the souq, haggle politely over silver and pottery, and try the halwa and coffee offered at stalls.
Mountain villages
In villages such as Al Hamra, Misfat Al Abriyeen and on Jebel Akhdar, people live in the old houses and work the terraces. Stay on paths, do not enter falaj channels or gardens, keep quiet and respect signs asking visitors to dress modestly.
Ramadan in the interior
Ramadan is observed strictly; outside hotels, finding food by day is difficult. Plan ahead and be discreet.
The basics everywhere in Oman
- Greet first with as-salamu alaykum; handshakes are common between men, but wait for a woman to offer her hand.
- Use your right hand to eat, give and receive.
- Dress modestly in public, with shoulders and knees covered.
- Ask before photographing people, especially women, and never photograph military or palace sites.
- Accept coffee and dates when offered; shake the cup gently when you have had enough.
- Keep your voice calm; public anger and swearing are taken seriously.
