Etiquette in Salalah and Dhofar: customs of Oman's south
Khareef crowds, Dhofari hospitality, mountain tribes, camel herds on the road and beach rules: how to behave respectfully in Salalah.
2026-10-19
Salalah and Dhofar have their own identity within Oman, with distinct dialects and languages, the Jibbali mountain communities and a deep pride in their frankincense heritage. Visitors are welcomed warmly, especially during the khareef season.
Dhofari hospitality
Dhofaris are known for generosity. In the mountains you may be invited for tea, camel milk or a meal; accept politely and take time to sit. Refusing hospitality outright can seem cold, so if you must decline, do it with thanks.
Khareef season manners
From late June to September, hundreds of thousands of visitors from the Gulf come for the monsoon. Families picnic on the green slopes; keep your distance from family groups, do not fly drones over them and take your rubbish with you. Traffic is heavy and fog thick on mountain roads, so drive slowly.
Camels and the mountains
Camels and cattle roam freely and often cross roads, especially at night and in fog. They belong to local herders; hitting one is serious. In mountain villages dress conservatively and ask before entering private land or photographing people.
Souqs and frankincense
At Al Haffa souq, bargaining is normal but friendly. Frankincense is offered for smelling and burning; it is polite to try it.
Beaches
Mughsail and other beaches have strong currents in the monsoon season, when swimming is dangerous and often prohibited. Dress modestly away from the water.
The basics everywhere in Oman
- Greet first with as-salamu alaykum; handshakes are common between men, but wait for a woman to offer her hand.
- Use your right hand to eat, give and receive.
- Dress modestly in public, with shoulders and knees covered.
- Ask before photographing people, especially women, and never photograph military or palace sites.
- Accept coffee and dates when offered; shake the cup gently when you have had enough.
- Keep your voice calm; public anger and swearing are taken seriously.
