Etiquette in Khasab and Musandam: border region customs
Musandam is remote, traditional and sensitive. Photography limits, village visits, dhow trips, border crossings and respect for local fishermen.
2026-10-19
Musandam is one of the most remote and traditional parts of Oman, with small communities of fishermen and mountain herders and a strategic location on the Strait of Hormuz. Visitors are welcome, but discretion matters here more than anywhere.
Photography
Do not photograph military or coastguard facilities, ports beyond the tourist harbour or anything that looks like security infrastructure. Ask before photographing people; many locals prefer not to be photographed.
Fjord villages
Some villages can only be reached by boat. When a dhow stops near them, stay on the boat or the beach unless invited, dress modestly and do not wander between houses.
On a dhow cruise
Swim in modest swimwear, keep the boat clean and do not feed dolphins. Alcohol is not served on most dhows and should not be brought on board.
Border crossings
Many visitors arrive by road from the UAE. Carry your passport and visa documents, follow officers' instructions and do not photograph border posts.
Mountain roads
On Jebel Harim and other mountain tracks you may meet herders and their animals; slow down and greet them.
The basics everywhere in Oman
- Greet first with as-salamu alaykum; handshakes are common between men, but wait for a woman to offer her hand.
- Use your right hand to eat, give and receive.
- Dress modestly in public, with shoulders and knees covered.
- Ask before photographing people, especially women, and never photograph military or palace sites.
- Accept coffee and dates when offered; shake the cup gently when you have had enough.
- Keep your voice calm; public anger and swearing are taken seriously.
