Etiquette in Sur: dhow yards, turtle beaches and coastal customs
How to visit Sur's dhow yards, behave at the Ras Al Jinz turtle reserve, swim in the wadis and respect a traditional seafaring town.
2026-10-19
Sur is a traditional seafaring town where shipbuilding and fishing families have lived for generations. Its people are welcoming but private, and its nature sites have strict rules to protect wildlife.
The dhow yards
Shipwrights often welcome visitors to watch them work. Ask permission before entering a yard or photographing workers, keep clear of tools and timber, and do not climb on boats under construction.
Ras Al Jinz turtle reserve
Turtle watching is allowed only on guided tours. Follow the guide's instructions, stay silent, use no flash or torches and never touch turtles or hatchlings. Light and noise can make turtles abandon nesting.
Wadi Shab and Wadi Tiwi
These wadis run through villages and farms. Swimwear is acceptable in the pools, but cover up on the paths through villages, keep the water clean and leave no rubbish. Respect private gardens and falaj channels.
The harbour and fish market
Early-morning fish auctions are busy workplaces; watch from the side and ask before taking photos.
Al Ayjah
The old houses of Al Ayjah are family homes. Admire the carved doors from the lane rather than entering courtyards.
The basics everywhere in Oman
- Greet first with as-salamu alaykum; handshakes are common between men, but wait for a woman to offer her hand.
- Use your right hand to eat, give and receive.
- Dress modestly in public, with shoulders and knees covered.
- Ask before photographing people, especially women, and never photograph military or palace sites.
- Accept coffee and dates when offered; shake the cup gently when you have had enough.
- Keep your voice calm; public anger and swearing are taken seriously.
